Stringed Instruments...
VioLink: The world of violins
An extremely well-connected, comprehensive site, based in Italy. All major aspects
of violin and other string-family instruments are covered. The links include international
information on courses, museums, shops, organisations, specialist groups and there
is also an online conference.
PhotoStory:
How to make a violin
The creation of a violin at the Violin makers School STRADIVARI of Cremona, Italy,
illustrated in 45 pictures with a 'story board'. The snapshots are best, if you
have a fast connection, but thumbnails are offered.
Stradivarius Violins
A page from the Smithsonian Institute on these most famous violins. (There is
an extensive bibliography, including some UK published titles).
Violin Making by Hans Johannsson
A site containing superb detail for the more advanced student. It includes an
account of the crafting of a violin, and a section all about bows, as well as
excellent advice on the care and maintenance of the instrument. A few sound files
illustrate different instruments.
String Pedagogy
Notebook
A resource for teachers and performers base on Robert Culver's course at the University
of Michigan School of Music. Despite the weighty sounding title, and American
bias, this site includes lots of well illustrated practical information (including
some Quick Time video clips) on technique, for the more advanced student. There
is also a Key Word Searchable Index to over 50 graded orchestral pieces, giving
notes, comments and teaching points on each one.
A Guide to Basic
Instrument Care
Approachable, comprehensive and sensible advice on looking after a violin, viola
or 'cello, by Canadian-based violin maker Andrew Kirk - but it does lack illustrations.
Internet Viola Society
Includes a history of the viola, but not many illustrations. There is a section on viola repertoire
with extensive lists of pieces, including links to publisher's sites.
Fiddles!
A home page with extensive links to other sites covering all styles of fiddle
playing, including Celtic, Canadian, Bluegrass, Jazz and Hardanger. There are
also links to several sources of traditional tunes - much of the music in gif
format, and also some sound files of tunes.
The International Society of Bassists
A professional society with members throughout the world. Includes a calendar
of events (mainly USA based).
The Internet Cello Society
Excellent coverage of the cello for all levels and interests. Includes interviews,
events, links and graded pieces as well as an introduction to the cello itself.
The
Cello Club of Great Britain
A page of information about the club, which aims to support young cellists.
